The United States of America is stepping up to the challenge to reduce America's dependency and addiction to Middle Eastern oil. We're looking ahead towards the future and spending the necessary funds in research and development at our top universities and private sector research and development companies. Life Without Oil?

Since 1974 the burning, hydrogen car, question of how much oil the world has left in its reserves has never fully vanished from my thoughts. At that time I was a sophomore in high school, Richard Nixon was President, our country's involvement in Vietnam had come to a close, and eight-track tapes defined state-of-the-art audio technology. This was also the year that those of, hydrogen car, us in the U.S. experienced an oil shortage. Because of an embargo that I didn't, hydrogen car, fully comprehend, gas prices suddenly skyrocketed, resulting in long lines at service stations reminiscent, hydrogen car, of the days of rationing during World War II. A few years before this, I was in grade school and recalled reading in a science textbook that was probably ten years out of date even then that in the United States alone, there was enough oil to last for about five billion years. My family used to take frequent trips to Oklahoma and Texas in those days, and indeed there were oil wells down there as far as the eye could see. I was a ten-year-old kid and had no reason to dispute my science book, even if it was written before Sputnik was launched.But by 1974, during the "fuel, hydrogen car, crisis," as it was dubbed, suddenly there were geologists and others with expertise who claimed that the world's oil supply was limited and would be depleted in a matter of decades, not in five billion years. As a teenager I scoffed at these dire predictions, still relying on my science textbook from fifth grade, and in fact, around 1977 or so, when the price of a gallon of gas reached $1.00, there was no more talk of shortages. Johnny Carson even made a joke about it. I dismissed the whole thing as a greedy ploy by the oil companies to increase profits. So did a lot of others.But now as we fast-forward, hydrogen car, some thirty years there are thousands of pages devoted to the subject of the world's finite supply of oil. There is much debate and speculation regarding the amount we truly have left. There are those who say that there are vast quantities thus far untouched while others say the cost and energy requirements needed to extract these untapped sources is prohibitive, and their most optimistic guess is that we have about forty years of usable oil left. They almost unanimously believe that production will peak around 2010 or so and that the supply will dwindle rapidly thereafter. In fact there are those who say production has already reached its peak. This could make the nearly $3.00 in some locations we currently pay for a gallon of gas triple. So much for my old textbook.This raises some questions. I'm confident that carmakers will produce vehicles that run on whatever fuel eventually replaces gasoline and diesel, but thousands of classic and vintage cars have survived into the twenty-first century and there is no reason to believe that many examples of these won't survive indefinitely. Will clubs devoted to the preservation of vehicles from the past be limited to trailering their prized possessions a few decades from now behind hydrogen or solar-powered trucks to shows only for museum-like displays? If there is no fuel left, enthusiasts could no longer drive them. Cruises would be limited to new models of whatever make is represented and whatever propels them. Vendors who specialize in mechanical parts, hydrogen car, for old classics would no longer serve any purpose except for those dedicated few who would continue to perform 100% correct restorations despite the knowledge that they would never be able to be driven. Will we see classic cars modified to run on a different fuel? It's one thing to put unleaded gas into an old car originally intended to run on leaded gas, but quite another to change to an entirely different means of propulsion. Will this mean that previously Stock Class cars would be considered Modified at shows? If not, then the current definitions of Stock and Modified will have to be, well, modified. Let's not forget the later model cars that would become obsolete as well.I may not be around to witness, hydrogen car, these possible scenarios, but I pity those who are younger. If there are still billions of potential barrels of oil under the ground, we need to find a feasible way to extract it. I can't imagine a car without an internal-combustion engine. Mazda Celebrates 40th Anniversary Of Wankel Rotary Engine

Mazda has, hydrogen car, recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of Mazda's first Wankel rotary engine powered vehicle. It was on May 30, 1967 that Mazda started selling the world's first dual-rotor RE car, the Cosmo Sport and ever since has produced almost two million rotary-engined vehicles.The first ever Wankel-engined auto was the NSU (now the famous Audi) Wankel Spider which was launched in 1964. Other automakers such Mercedes, Rolls-Royce, Norton, Suzuki, General Motors, Citroen, John Deere,, hydrogen car, and Arctic Cat have tried experimenting with the Wankel engine. Some were even able to produce small runs of the Wankel engine. However, the only successful manufacturer that was able to produce the engine designed by the German engineer Felix Wankel in quantities is Mazda.By end of the 1950s, many automakers around the world have dedicated considerable Research & Development resources for the production of the rotary engine (RE) however most have surrendered because they were unable to surpass the, hydrogen car, difficult technical, hydrogen car, challenges that comes with the technology. It was only Mazda that has persevered, hydrogen car, and eventually was able to overcome all the obstacles and successfully achieved RE mass production. Mazda was also able to introduce other RE vehicles into the market that includes the Familia Rotary Coupe, Savanna, RX-7, and the Eunos Cosmo. And of course knowing Mazda they have continuously developed the economy and environmental performance of their RE-engined vehicles that is why they are still selling them today. The maker of the famous Mazda header pipe, Mazda has started its involvement in motor sports in 1968 following the release of the Cosmo Sport when RE cars has started participating in car races. Then in 1991, the Mazda 787B made history with the rotary engine when it became the only Japanese car ever to claim victory at the Le Mans 24 Hour endurance race. And ever since over 100 win in both the touring car series in Japan and in the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) series in the United States was won by RE-equipped racecars. The RX-8 sports car, hydrogen car, that was launched last April of 2003 was powered by a new-generation, naturally aspirated RENESIS, hydrogen car, rotary engine which is more compact, more powerful, and more environmentally, hydrogen car, friendly, hydrogen car, than its predecessors. Japanese Automakers Boost Us 2006 Deficit

In 2006, deficit in the United States hit a record since Americans necessitate more goods from China, more oil from different foreign sources, hydrogen car, and greater vehicles from - JAPAN. The leading automaker that boosted the deficit is Toyota Motor Corp. and its divisions - Lexus and Scion."The consequences of these persistent and massive trade deficits include not only failed businesses, displaced workers, lower real wages, and rising inequality, but also permanent devastation of our communities," said the letter from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Rep. Sander Levin, D-Royal Oak, among others.Toyota, the world's second largest automaker, is also the eighth largest company around the globe. Last year, the total revenue of the automaker amounted to $185 billion. This is one of the reasons why analysts in the industry predict that, hydrogen car, Toyota will take over General Motors' post as the world's largest carmaker any time this year. The goal of Toyota for 2007 is to produce 9.4 million vehicles to compete with GM's production.Toyota has established a solid reputation for quality around the globe. The latest prototype built by Volvo is designed to answer the alarming environmental concern of customers. The fuels for the Multi Fuel Prototype includes standard gasoline, E85 (bioethanol), natural gas, biomethane,, hydrogen car, and hythane. From among the five fuels the hythane is the most interesting in the sense that it's a mixture of hydrogen and methane. It is also the most recent type of fuel blend introduced to the public. The hythane is composed of 10 percent hydrogen and 90 percent methane.Besides the ability to run on five different fuels, another notable feature of the Multi Fuel Prototype is its relatively consistent high-performance, hydrogen car, no matter what the fuel used. Volvo said that the turbocharged engine prototype is producing about 200 horsepower and sufficient enough to power up the wagon. The hythane together with the E85 (bioethanol) and CNG biomethane are considered extra-clean fuels, this is also one of the very reasons why the vehicle has been able to pass all existing emissions regulations imposed in any market at present. The automaker is also confident that its Prototype will be able to pass the upcoming EuroV emissions regulations. The mentioned fuels also possess qualities that can make them carbon neutral, hydrogen car, . What does it mean? It means that the amount of carbon emitted when the fuel is burned is equivalent to the amount acquired by the crops used to make the fuel.And here is another news! ---The Swedish luxury brand of Ford is also contemplating in converting its entire lineup into green cars. The S40 1.6D is just one the automaker's efficient production vehicle that consumes 48mpg of diesel. The emissions produced are fifteen to twenty percent lesser than an equivalently powerful gasoline, hydrogen car, model. The V50 which is a station wagon variant and available in Europe is a Flexi-Fuel model. The car can run using E85 bioethanol. By using bioethanol it generates approximately 80 percent fewer carbon dioxide emissions as compared to gasoline. Europe's Largest Automaker Joins Designing Sustainable Mobility Summit

In the news: US subsidiary of Volkswagen is, hydrogen car, giving a high profile to vehicles with, hydrogen car, lower environmental impact at the Designing Sustainable Mobility Summit held at the Art Center College of Design in Southern California. At the summit designers and other transportation experts from various countries will share, hydrogen car, their ideas on how to make future mobility more environmentally attuned. The TSI is famous in Europe and now being considered for distribution in the US. But this money could be spent for the rapid research of hydrogen fuel cells and possibly give a good result in the form of cheap and effective technologies. This is an example of opportunity cost or the cost of a forgone, hydrogen car, opportunity. Of course it is very difficult to make a more or less, hydrogen car, precise assessment of the opportunity cost concerning the oil and hydrogen energy sources in financial terms and that is why such, hydrogen car, assessment is not used in economics. But why is opportunity cost issue is so important and why it is raised ultimately? To answer these questions it is necessary to understand that growing needs of our society can not be satisfied because of lack of resources. Modern technologies allow to produce energy by extracting oil from the deepest, hydrogen car, entrails and of course such production, hydrogen car, is more expensive. Despite of growing prices on energy the demand grows also and increased demand increases prices even more. One day most people just could not afford using oil as a primary source of energy and it, hydrogen car, will result in economic crisis if another energy sources would not be mastered. For this reason scientists search new energy sources taking into consideration its price, availability and cleanness. Demand on one or another energy source depends on consumers' income, tastes, wealth, inflationary expectations and future expectations. It means that hydrogen will be purchased only by those people who can afford it, who like it (from the point of ecology, convenience, prevalence etc), who need it (e.g. to fill up a car powered by hydrogen) etc. If there would be, hydrogen car, a clear and marked trend to use hydrogen as the energy of future the demand would also increase because people would buy hydrogen powered cars and need fuel. Supply of hydrogen is affected by the following non-price factors: availability of resources and production techniques - if technology would be not too expensive but effective and based on the resources which are available in abundance then supply will be significant and vice versa; taxes and subsidies - if the government would establish very high tax rate on production or distribution of hydrogen then such business will not be profitable and fetching, in the opposite subsidies, hydrogen car, and low tax rate will, hydrogen car, cause supply increase by attracting investors.Government plays important role in the economics of hydrogen fuel cells. First of all government finances its own research programs on effective technologies of production, transportation and storage of hydrogen. By the way modern technologies allow quite affordable hydrogen, hydrogen car, production but the storage and transportation, hydrogen car, technologies are too expensive and it makes hydrogen not so attractive and perspective. In order to get new effective technologies government should stimulate commercial researchers and producers by instituting prizes, granting subsidies and lax credits, decreasing tax rates and providing discounts for them. In addition government can draw together the researchers and give them a basis for cooperation by organizing scientific conferences on the fuel, hydrogen car, issuer etc. Another way how a government can stimulate hydrogen research and application is by regulating tax rates on oil and gas production. High tax rate will cause a desire to use another energy sources and consequent research programs. Low tax rates will make no difference to energy producers so far.Burning hydrogen is considered to be ecologically clean but its production is concerned with atmospheric pollution and this in turn requires regulation on governmental and legal basis, in other words, the allowed pollution amounts must be determined by the international law.
